The United States - Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission  (US-SLFC) - Visitor Awards for 2008-09

 
 

The US-SLFC was founded in 1952 by an Agreement between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of Ceylon for the administration of educational exchange programmes in Sri Lanka. The programme aims to promote cultural understanding between the United States and Sri Lanka through mutual academic exchange. To-date over 1000 Sri Lankan and American scholars have participated in various academic programmes monitored by the J. William Fulbright Scholarship Board. The US-SLFC also offers a student advisory service, which provides free individual/group counselling and reference material on educational opportunities, admission processes and standardised tests for those desirous of studying in the USA.

 

The US-SLFC invites applications from Sri Lankan professionals in the humanities, fine/performing arts such as   music, theatre, writing, painting, design, photography and, sports, journalism, law,  sciences, paramedical services and business, an opportunity to gain exposure (through a project developed by the grantee) to the latest advancements in their respective fields of work in the U.S. The awards aim to provide grantees an opportunity  to collaborate with U.S. counterparts, forge links between local and U.S. professionals in the fields, build lasting ties between the two countries through their collaborations and share the experience and learning gained in the U.S. with local counterparts.

Eligibility:

  • Be a Sri Lankan citizen
  • Demonstrate aptitude and accomplishment in the field thorough professional involvement, awards received, achievements or output
  • Have a minimum of 5 years of experience in the area.
  • Demonstrate commitment to developing this field in Sri Lanka and sharing knowledge with counterparts and the public in Sri Lanka.
   
Duration of award: 3 months (minimum)

Rules and Guidelines:

Only short-listed candidates will be contacted. All successful candidates will be required to reside in Sri Lanka for a minimum of 2 years on completion of the grant. US-SLFC is pleased to announce the following awards for the academic year of 2009-10:

 

Fulbright Student Awards:

The US-SLFC invites applications from qualified candidates for the Fulbright Student Programme for the academic year 2009 - 2010 in the following disciplines; Social Sciences & Humanities, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Architecture and Engineering, Commerce and Management Studies. The awards are intended to assist a limited number of scholars, selected for their academic excellence, to do their post-graduate (master’s level only) study in American universities. Graduates who have not had extensive prior exposure to the United States are encouraged to apply
Eligibility:
  1. Be a Sri Lankan citizen
  2. Possess a 4-year bachelor’s degree with 1st or upper 2nd  class honours from a Sri Lankan  university. Those with degrees from non-Sri Lankan universities are welcome to apply provided they possess an equivalent of a 1st/ upper-second class degree. Applicants with degrees from India are required to possess a relevant post-graduate qualification.
  3. Be committed to reside in Sri Lanka on completion of the award for a minimum of 2 years
  4. Possess at a minimum,  1 year of  post-qualifying experience in the proposed field of study
  5. be below the age of 35 years on the 1st of October, 2008
  6. Number of Awards: 3
Duration of award: a maximum of 2 academic years
Deadline: 10th of June 2008
Interviews (of short listed candidates): July/August 2008
 

Fulbright Advanced Research and University Lecturing Scholar Awards:

The US-SLFC invites applications from Sri Lankan scholars who wish to pursue postdoctoral research and or lecturing at a U.S. university or research institution.
 
Eligibility:
  • Be a Sri Lankan citizen
  • Possess a PhD from a recognised university
  • Demonstrate a clear rationale for conducting the proposed research in the U.S.
  • While applicants from all disciplines will be considered, preference will be given to candidates in the fields of humanities and social sciences
  • Age: Below 50 years on 1st October 2008
Number of Awards: 3
Duration of award: 6 months
Deadline: 10th of June 2008
Interviews (short listed candidates): December 2008

Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program and The United States – Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission (US-SLFC)

 

                            

 

The US-SLFC, in association with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), is pleased to announce the Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program for Sri Lanka.  The US-SLFC, in cooperation with USDA, will manage and administer the Borlaug Fellows program in Sri Lanka .

Purpose                                                                                                                        

The Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program   aims to promote food security and economic growth by increasing scientific knowledge and collaborative research to improve agricultural productivity. In Sri Lanka , the Borlaug Fellows Program will:

  • Provide entry-level Sri Lankan agricultural research scientists, faculty and policymakers with one-on-one training opportunities in the fields of agricultural research;
  • Provide scientists, faculty and policymakers with practical experience and exposure to new technologies that can enhance their own research endeavors;
  • Foster increased collaboration and networking between Sri Lankan and U.S. agricultural scientists and policymakers to improve agricultural productivity;
  • Facilitate the transfer of new science and agricultural technologies to strengthen agricultural practices;
  • Address obstacles to the adoption of technology such as ineffectual policies and regulations.

Priority Research Areas
Biotechnology and Water Resource Management    

Training Venues
Training venues will include U.S. land grant universities, USDA or other U.S. government agency research facilities, not-for-profit institutions and international agricultural research centers.

Length of Fellowships

Fellowships are generally for 4 to 6 weeks but can be longer if merited by the research topic.  Additional fellowship components are being developed for students in the process of receiving an advanced degree and for leadership training.  

   

Eligibility:

  • Citizens of Sri Lanka;
  • Good working knowledge of the English language;
  • While preference will be given to candidates with PhDs, those with Master’s (with 3 years of practical experience or working towards a Master’s degree with 5 years experience) are strongly encouraged to apply;
  • Current employment in a university, government or other research entity in Sri Lanka;
  • Early stage in their professional career;
  • Demonstrated intention to continue working in Sri Lanka.

Hubert H. Humphrey - North-South Fellowships

 
 
These awards are specially designed for mid-career professionals to enable them to participate in a ten-month non-degree programme of academic coursework and professional internship. Candidates should be mid-career professionals in leadership positions with a commitment to public service and the potential for professional advancement.
 
Number of Awards: 1
Grant period: 10 months
   
Eligibility:
  • Be a citizen of Sri Lanka
  • Possess a university degree requiring a least four years of full time study in order to qualify for admission to US programmes of graduate study.
  • Have a minimum of five years of professional experience prior to the application deadline
  • Be able to display personal initiative and an interest in the policies pertaining to the field
  • Be proficient in both written and spoken English (a minimum score of 525 paper-based or 195 computer-based on the TOEFL, if available).
  • Be below 50 years before the application deadline
