SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY ISCHOOL SOPHOMORES WIN MLB.COM COLLEGE CHALLENGE

A team of School of Information Studies (iSchool) sophomores won the third annual MLB.com College Challenge with a smartphone app they created. The MLB.com College Challenge was an opportunity for Syracuse University students to spend all night working, hack-a-thon style, on a problem posed by MLB.com staffers.
This year’s challenge emphasized the use of gamification elements. After spending all night working on their apps, students presented in front of a team of MLB.com staffers and iSchool faculty members.
During the spring semester, the team members will be treated to a trip to MLB.com headquarters in New York City, and will have an opportunity to discuss their app with more MLB.com staffers. From faculty research to international study abroad experiences to global collaborations to alumni placement, the iSchool has a strong international presence to complement the extensive international network of Syracuse University.

EMMY-WINNING COMPOSER MICHAEL BACON TEACHES FILM SCORING AT LEHMAN COLLEGE

In his class at Lehman College on the history of film scoring, Michael Bacon tells his students that every movie score uses a secret weapon.
"Like in ‘Jaws,’ the da-da, da-da," one of his students, Nadeera Abdul-Basheer, explains. "You remember that pattern, and it brings that association with the shark."
It turns out that Bacon, 63, an Emmy-winning composer for film and television, and brother of movie star Kevin Bacon, is one of Lehman’s secret weapons for bringing careers in film, music and other media to life for students.
