Workshop on Clear & Effective Legal Writing

The US-SL Fulbright Commission will be conducting a one-day workshop for lawyers and law students.

This workshop suits experienced attorneys as well as law students. This hands-on, interactive workshop will review basic writing skills and will provide tips for more advanced writing techniques.

The course will address the following topics:

* what your writing tells your reader about you

* plain language v. legalese

* common grammar and punctuation errors

* gender-neutral and bias-free writing

* writing effective sentences

*making connections between sentences and paragraphs

*writing persuasively

Workshop Coordinator

Professor Mimi Samuel has been teaching Legal Writing for 12 years at Seattle University School of Law, which has a nationally-recognized Legal Writing programme. She has conducted training sessions on effective legal writing for judges, magistrates, lawyers, and law students in India, South Africa, Uganda, Kenya, Botswana, and China. In addition, she has worked with a number of law faculties to develop their Legal Writing curriculums. She is currently teaching a Legal Writing course at the University of Peradeniya as a Fulbright Specialist.

The US-SL Fulbright Commission was founded in 1952 by an Agreement between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of Ceylon for the administration of educational exchange programmes in Sri Lanka. The programme aims to promote cultural understanding between the United States and Sri Lanka through mutual academic exchange.
